Liaquat Ali Khan, Pakistan’s first Prime Minister, played a crucial role in shaping the newly created country’s political, economic, and social foundations. Serving from 1947 until his assassination in 1951, he made several key decisions that helped stabilize Pakistan during its formative years. His leadership and policies laid the groundwork for Pakistan’s future development. Here are some of his most significant contributions:

 1. Adoption of the Objectives Resolution (1949) 

One of Liaquat Ali Khan’s most important contributions was the introduction and passage of the Objectives Resolution on March 12, 1949. This resolution became the foundation of Pakistan’s constitution and defined the country’s ideological direction. It stated that sovereignty belongs to Allah and that Pakistan would be governed according to Islamic principles while ensuring democracy, human rights, and the rights of minorities. This decision shaped Pakistan’s identity as an Islamic Republic and influenced future constitutional developments.

 2.  PStrengtheningakistan’s Economy 

At the time of independence, Pakistan faced severe economic challenges, including a lack of financial resources and industrial infrastructure. Liaquat Ali Khan took decisive steps to stabilize the economy. He successfully negotiated with India to release Pakistan’s share of financial assets worth Rs. 750 million, which had been withheld after partition. This move provided Pakistan with much-needed funds to manage its affairs. 

Additionally, he encouraged industrialization by introducing economic policies that promoted local businesses and foreign investments. He also laid the foundation for the State Bank of Pakistan, which started operations on July 1, 1948, ensuring that Pakistan had an independent monetary system. 

 3. Strengthening Pakistan’s Defense 

Recognizing the importance of a strong defense system, Liaquat Ali Khan focused on building Pakistan’s military. He allocated a significant portion of the budget to defense, modernized the army, and established strong relations with friendly countries to acquire weapons and training. His policies helped Pakistan strengthen its armed forces, ensuring national security in the wake of tensions with India, especially after the first

Kashmir war in 1948.  

 4. Foreign Policy and Alliances 

Liaquat Ali Khan’s diplomatic approach helped Pakistan gain international recognition and support. One of his most significant foreign policy decisions was choosing to align Pakistan with the Western bloc during the Cold War. His visit to the United States in 1950 was a strategic move that strengthened ties with the West and resulted in economic and military aid. His efforts ensured that Pakistan gained a respectable position in global politics.

 5. Land Reforms and Social Welfare 

To address economic inequality, Liaquat Ali Khan took steps toward land reforms, aiming to distribute agricultural land among landless farmers. He also worked on improving education and healthcare by allocating resources to build schools, hospitals, and basic infrastructure for the welfare of citizens. His government promoted social justice, economic fairness, and national unity.
