Spain is a fantastic place to live and the Spanish people are warm and friendly. But what happens when it all feels too much? When you feel yourself falling and you don’t have your friend s and family to support you? T o really explain how you feel in a foreign language to a stranger can be difficult and for someone to counsel you in a second language can be even more difficult. Sometimes disastrous. We caught up with Nicola Westby at a recent conference in Malaga and asked her about her experiences counselling here in Spain. She explained “Many people come here to Spain running away from problems or thinking that they will have no problems when they get here. Nothing could be further from the truth on both counts. If you have unresolved baggage in never leaves you, until you have dealt with it. Problems you leave in the UK (or wherever you lived) do not just vanish and they have to be faced up to and reconciled. When you move to Spain you will experience many different problems you have not experienced before such as isolation, frustration, redundancy and a host of other feelings.” She went on to explain that she provides counselling in the Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical
to private clients. Clients are referred to her by doctors , holistic practitioners and by word of mouth with a free initial assessment.Marriage guidance, drug, alcohol dependancy in Spain tend to be Nicola’s majority of cases although she has also done specialist counselling with children. Nicola uses her 15 years probation and social services experience to help her clients but says the tools she has learned through her NLP training have proved the most dynamic.” NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and is an immensely powerful set of tools and techniques to help people overcome emotional and psychological problems. The results can be quite startling even from my point of view as the practitioner, when you see the clients life change in front of your eyes. When their perception changes and a shift occurs it can free people from bottled up emotions that have limited their quality of life”. Nicola continued by explaining that NLP training and life skills are available for everyone to access and has considerably improved her own life and her own perceptions of other people. NLP training courses in Spain are limited especially at this moment in time with the crisis, but hopefully they will more available in the future.
